The next phase 5:30 PM 7/20/2006 |
Now we have the basics together, I thought I'd show you what the next goals are with the closet. First and foremost, the doors need to be added to it, so it can actually close up and hide the mill. This is something I've already taken into account - and the reason the closet is a little wider than it could be, is so that standard house doors may be fitted to the front. The closet is exactly two-doors wide. The reason I decided to do this is that unfinished panel doors are very cheap, and will look a lot better than any attempt at facing I could hope to pull off. They'll really look the part once I'm done staining and varnishing them, too...
The next mission is the control-panel. I intend to build a custom control panel with specialized buttons, manual jog-handles (MPG's), and all sorts of other neat esoteric dials (ammeters, indicator LED's etc), and of course, a massive big red E-stop/panic button.
And finally, I'll put in some safety-glass, that will hinge in the same direction as the doors. This should keep the dust and flying swarf down, and give a little protection from those pinging 2mm endmills.

Fast Forward 22:10 04/09/2006 |
| Since we've done all of this before, let's do this next part in fast forward. You've seen me drill, countersink, slice 'n dice already, there is little to be gained from anymore of this. So I'll make this really quick. |
.We cut some slats.
.We install the slats in the closet.
.We use a dremel to cut out some plywood (6mm hardwood, contouring to mill)
.We install wood.
.We install the front panel. Suddenly we have an actual "table".
Human reality is paper-thin... |
| Now we use the same basic pattern to do the shelving at the bottom of the mill. 12mm MDF, with this and the hardboard we suddenly have a very respectable, if somewhat undecorated, little closet. The wood at the bottom will also be useful to us as a shelve on which to put the PC, servo drivers, powersupply, and a vacuum cleaner for picking up the swarf. Nice! Time to add the doors... |
.We drill holes for the rail track
.We install the doors.
.Door closing
.We dye the first door, a nice dark-oak colour... |
